The Bega Valley-Koala

The Bega Valley
BY Joyce Lau
How has Human Activity Caused the Koala to be endangered and how their own adaptations lead them into being endangered.
Human Activity
- Humans kill the Koalas because of their fur. Koala fur is very special and it's worth a lot.
- Tree cutting is another aspect where humans are involved in. Trees are basically the Koala's main habitat and if we, humans cut them down, then the Koala's lose their habitat and their habitat has their food on it.
Own Adaptation
- If one of the Koalas catch a disease, it can be spread among the community. They can't resist the disease because the Koalas are all genetically connected. And if one Koala catches a disease then the whole community is affected. Often these diseases can kill numerous Koalas. Often these diseases bring disastrous results and hundreds or thousands or maybe even millions can be wiped out because of a single virus.
- Breeding is another problem. Koalas only breed once a year and only produce one joey. Occasionally, Koalas may have twins but that is rare. Not having more than one joey at a time and in only within one year makes the Koala population die down compared to other animals. So this is the Koala's own adaptation that leads them into being endangered because they aren't breeding and having as many as other animals.
