Behavioural Adaptations are learned or inherited behaviours that help organisms to survive.

  • Koala's are very slow animals. Their predator is well faster than them e.g. the Dingo. If Koala's didn't climb tall trees then the species would be extinct very quickly because the Koala is too slow compared to its predator. So by climbing tall trees, it helps the koala's to stay out of trouble.
  • The male Koala's have a very strong scent gland. The male Koala's use this scent to mark their "home" tree. The male Koala's rub the gland onto the trunk. This lets other male Koala's know that this is his tree.
  • When a koala dies, the whole social group knows because of the particular koala's scent. Therefore it takes a while for that scent to fade away. That means that each Koala knows who is dead because they can no longer smell their scent. This particular behavioural adaptation links into one of the structural I said before. Koala's have big noses so that they can smell the leaves. Well in this case, the big noses are also useful towards their social group members.
